In Madness At Midnight you control a gang of deranged cultists trying to summon their Lovecraftian god of choice.
You use action dice to visit different places in Arkham, activate location abilities, and initiate fights with the other players. Your aim is to fulfil sinister plots, defeat the feared investigators, and/or control key locations in order to gain Victory Points.
The first player to reach 13 Victory Points wins the game and gets to end the world. But if you don’t keep the investigators at bay, they’ll call in a federal raid and make everybody lose - except for the cult with the least points who escapes notice.
The Action Dice form the core of Madness At Midnight. Each player has a set and uses them to move cultists, activate location abilities, and initiate fights. You can, of course, reroll your Action Dice, but only as long as your cult hasn’t gained too much madness. So the madder your cultists are, the harder it is to make them do exactly what you want.
A big part of the game is to control or dominate important locations in Arkham, but you can also activate them to gain stuff. You can learn ancient spells at Miskatonic University, gain forbidden lore in the black lodge, acquire mystical items at the River Docks, and more.
Locations change during the game depending on the moon phases – you simply flip the location tiles to reveal new abilities. This forces you to rethink your strategy and ensures that no game will be the same.
Will your cult be the first to unleash an unspeakable horror on the world? Or will your plans be foiled by the other cults or the pesky investigators?
