The Scandinavians of the Viking Age were not only seafarers, but in fact, they were primarily farmers and landowners. They were free men who bore arms and made important decisions.

Groups of farms formed villages that all their inhabitants worked to defend and expand.

The fundamental principle of these societies was that the collective always came before the individual. Everything revolved around the community, and the spoils of raids were divided to maintain cohesion.

Politically, small groups or clans formed around a victorious leader, wealthy enough to redistribute treasures among his followers.

These local assemblies brought together free men to resolve disputes or make important decisions. In Iceland, an island-wide assembly was even created: the Althing, the thing of all things.
